How do I select the hosting service for a search website developed by me?
Well do some shopping online, compare the prices, look for the best one. There are many in the market and you even get free web hosting service. but these are not very reliable.. hey try yahoo , they offer a good on web hosting and also offer a reliable service.. check out this link http://in.business.yahoo.com/

Right. Just avoid Godaddy, they love money too much. :D
I think if you are starting, look for the free offers. They are almost all displaying ads, but as long they don't use popups or popunders it is okay. When you gain more traffic, you can move to a cheap host and put your own ads.
Maybe start your search with this review site: http://www.100-best-free-webspace.com/

I have 5 criterias which help me to focus on what I need.
Speed, features, space, price, service.
Should it be a starting website with less features, i'd choose a free hosting. No matter they show their own ads or not.
Then you start to have visitors, do you want to run your own ads, or get rid of them. Find the cheapest possible.
When you have more visitors, you need to increase service. I mean you will need support, and good support is like gold. I personally like to choose a host from my country/region. It helps to develop a relationship on the long term.

I disagree with the cheapest is best thought. You get what you pay for and hardly ever what they promise. I know a lot of web hosting companies promise Unicorns and Mermaids which you obviously aren't going to get. Go with free if you can't afford $10 a month. If you are a business and can't afford that little then its time to start looking for a job or rethinking you business model.
A fact you need to realize is unless you pay for a dedicated box, you are getting a shared account. That means everything connected to the box that you and possibly 500 other people may be hosted on; disk space, memory, CPU's and bandwidth. This means that many times visitors will be handed a 404 Page Not Found instead of your website because the system resources are being pushed past their limited by others.
My suggestion, look for a hosting company with a Zero Tolerance Policy against spammers and phishers and look for a hosting company that represents their hosting packages with realistic features. Unlimited bandwidth, unlimited disk space and the such are just as fairytale as the afore mentioned Unicorns.
My company has the strictest Zero Tolerance Policy I know of.

Very good point. These days, basic hosting is very cheap.
But don't do my mistake a few years back: I paid a VPS for a two pages website :D

I'm all for free enterprise and I'm also for cutting corners; tucktail.com is a reseller for GoDaddy.com. Even the site is cookie cutter.

Depends upon you and the location where you stay, I used yahoo business hosting as well as microsoft hosting (works great with top level domains) :)
